The Sultan is the one who holds the ‘sulta’, the power, the control of the place. In the Alhambra, they knew this and took luxury and decoration to the highest level of expression. Now the walls speak and recite poetry, the arches that once intertwined are now adorned with flowers, fruits, and hearts. It’s now impossible to tell where the material begins and ends. There is something of this in the Sultan hoops, where you can’t tell if the arch holds the apples or if they grow from the trunk.
